How to Recognize Handmade Glass Beads

Handmade glass beads are created using the lampwork technique. A glass rod is heated in the flame of a torch until the glass becomes soft. The molten glass is then wound around a metal rod coated with a release agent.

This metal rod is called a mandrel. The release agent ensures that the finished bead can later be removed from the mandrel and at the same time forms the bead hole.

While the glass is still soft, the bead is shaped and decorated with colors or patterns. Each bead is created individually in the flame.

High-quality glass beads are then placed directly from the flame into a kiln. There, they cool down in a controlled process to prevent internal stress. This step ensures that the beads are stable and durable.

If you know what to look for, handmade glass beads can be identified quite reliably.

Small differences in shape and size

Industrial beads are usually pressed in molds and therefore look identical. Handmade glass beads, on the other hand, are created one by one in the flame. This can lead to slight variations in shape or size.

These small differences are a typical sign of handcrafted work.

Individual patterns in the glass

Many handmade glass beads contain layers of color, patterns, or decorative elements within the glass. These are created during the process in the flame.

Even when several beads are made with the same design, no two beads are exactly alike.

The bead hole

During the bead-making process, a release agent is used so the bead can later be removed from the mandrel. After firing, the bead hole must be carefully cleaned to remove any residue of this release agent.

This is a rather time-consuming and often unpopular step, but it is essential. High-quality handmade beads are always thoroughly cleaned in this area.

Lampwork beads are produced worldwide. Large quantities of handmade glass beads are also made in workshops with very low labor costs.

These beads often show less attention to detail, for example uneven patterns or poorly cleaned bead holes.

With high-quality handmade glass beads, much more care is taken – from the color composition to the finishing work.

The appeal of handmade glass beads lies in their individuality and variety. Each bead is created separately in the flame and reflects the work of the person who made it.

Small variations in shape, color, and pattern are not flaws, but part of the process. They give each piece of jewelry its own presence.
